Resonant Distances investigates human connection as a phenomenon that extends beyond language, representation and conventional forms of communication. Conceived as a social brain laboratory, the exhibition explores how emerging neurotechnologies can reveal relational dimensions of empathy, attention and co-presence that often remain imperceptible.


Drawing from contemporary research on inter-brain synchronization—the tendency for neural activity to align during shared attention and social interaction—the exhibition examines how cognitive and emotional relationships might be experienced through technological mediation. Rather than treating the brain as an isolated system, Resonant Distances approaches cognition as a distributed and relational process, emerging through encounters between individuals, environments and technical systems.


In dialogue with the Ars Electronica 2026 theme NEGOTIATING HUMANITY – FUTURE BEGINS, the exhibition reflects on what it means to connect in an era characterized by ubiquitous communication technologies yet increasing experiences of distance, fragmentation and social isolation. By bringing together neuroscience, robotics, interactive systems and artistic research, Resonant Distances proposes a space where human connection is not communicated through words, but negotiated through shared biological rhythms, movement and embodied interaction.

0.5–100 Hz explores empathy across bodies and interfaces. Inter-brain synchronization is made visible through the movements of two shape-changing robotic devices, generating a shared experience of distance, motion and connection.
